........These mouldings are normally not part of the job I do on stairs, so I charge £10 each to strip, sand and varnish them. In this case there were 32 such mouldings, each requiring individual attention and time.

...........Each of these mouldings matches a single step, and the pattern matches that on the top of the risers on the stairs Where the staircase bends the curved mouldings are not removable and must be stripped in situ. By removing the mouldings a better job can be done on them in the workshop. When the stairs are finished these mouldings are nailed back in place using round ringed brassed nails, which grip similar to screws. The spindles are dove-tailed in, and the moulding help to keep the spindles from being pushed outwards, so strongly gripping nails are used.

........The original craftsmen used 2" square cut flooring nails to hold them in position.......which is not necessary, in fact the mouldings had to be extensively filled to repair the large holes left after removing these large brads.
