I was hired to sand the floors below the tiles. This was a gamble as they may not have been in good condition, and I would have ripped all the tiles up to look at them. The solution was to lay new wood and treat it.

.....Here I laid a pine floor over vynil tiles. This wood is actually structural floor-boards, meant to be laid and nailed onto joists, to replace original floor-boards. This means the wood is not well machined, it is bowed and uneven. This would not matter if using it for it's intended purpose as I have very powerful joist clamps which would force it straight and then the nailing would keep it straight.

However, using it as a floating floor means I cannot do that, there's nothing for the big clamps to grip. Also I had to be VERY CAREFUL about screwing and nailing as one never knows where the pipes are located. It's too late after going through one and causing a flood. So the screws only went where no pipes could be located, and not many of them at that.

After laying the floor the client specified walnut stain. I trimmed the borders with scotia moulding and the thresholds with carved quadrant, also stained and varnished.
