The entrance hall of a house in Muswell Hill

This flooring is only 6 mm thick when first laid. It is secured to the sub-floor with 1 inch panel pins. To sand this type of floor you must know what you are doing. Being so thin there is no room for mistakes. The whole floor can be ruined very easily. I have seen this happen, deep gouges that cannot be sanded even because the floor is so thin. The only solution to a ruined batten floor is to replace it, at a cost of £50 a sq metre plus labour.

In this case replacement would not be an option as the unusual sized battens are not made any more. So a different sized floor would be needed.

I had a very pleasant afternoon/evening playing table tennis with the owner on an all-weather table in the garden whilst the varnish was drying between coats.
