Finished old stairs in Haberdasher St., Barbican. Note the antiquing graining which prevents one slipping, and catches the light in a 3-D relief effect. This is the same as old oak beams ageing naturally.

I did these stairs in April 2000 and the photos taken October 2002. This shows the wear resistance of the graining and sealer I use. To recoat is a simple DIY job. The hard work is the original sanding and graining.

The central darker area on each tread is because the sides were painted, and the centres were not, they had a carpet runner on them. This meant the sides of the treads, and risers did not have the darkening effect of light and other effects. Nothing can be done about this shade variation. If you do not like this then do not have your stairs sanded, purchase new wood.
